About this report

This is Whitbread's seventh environment report

Audience

This report has been written primarily for an external audience and with a variety of stakeholders in mind, including our investors, customers and employees. It has been informed by the research we have carried out with our stakeholders, as referred to in the section 'Stakeholder Engagement'. We are also mindful of the fact that the data contained in this report is often used for research purposes and therefore we have included detailed data and KPIs.

Scope

The reporting year is Whitbread's financial year 2008/09, namely 29 February 2008 to 26 February 2009.

We report on Whitbread owned sites, where the Company has full operational control, therefore excluding franchises and sites outside the UK. This report represents circa 98% of the Company in terms of total global revenue.

In the summer of 2008, Whitbread's food distribution was outsourced to an external logistics company and is therefore excluded from this report.

Legal compliance

The Company had no environment-related prosecutions in 2008/09.

Assurance

Whitbread management has provided the content of this report. Data on energy, water, waste and the car fleet has been provided by external suppliers and collated by Whitbread management.

This report is reviewed by the Whitbread PLC board. Corporate Citizenship provides external assurance and commentary.

Data

When calculating greenhouse gas emissions, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard method has been used.

There are a number of changes to the data contained in this report and these are listed below:

  1. The addition of data on LPG consumption;
  2. The removal of data associated with the distribution fleet (now outsourced);
  3. The recalculation of carbon emissions using the latest conversion factors as per guidance from Defra; and
  4. The addition of estimated data where actual data is not available.
